Project Description |
Names of Ancestors: | “John” (probably Hovannes or similar) Avanessian, his wife (unknown first name) Petrosian.
I know their son’s name but I will not post it publicly for privacy reasons. |
Religion of family Member(s): | Christian |
Village/Town/Province/State of family: | Vedi, Armenia |
Range of years which are required for the research: | 1850-present |
Specific dates and events: | Family migrated from Vedi, Armenia to Iran for work in the early 20th century. They were then hunted down by Muslims and the husband/father (John Avanessian) and his wife’s ( ?? Petrosian) brother were martyred while their two-year-old hid. The wife/mother Petrosian fell ill and died several years later, still in Iran. The son remained a Christian but changed his last name to avoid unwanted attention in Iran. |
Occupations of family member(s):
Names of any spouses and how they relate to your family lines:
Sibling names: | |
Dates of immigration: | |
Information available from previous research:
Goal of research: | I want to find out:
1. Did the orphan have any relatives whose descendants survive? (The orphan’s grandson would like to find any lost relatives)
2. Did the family migrate alone or with a clan? If a clan, what happened to the others?
3. What was the family’s background before they left Vedi, Armenia? What Christian denomination, what ethnicity, what places had they lived, etc.
4. Documents proving that the orphan was born in Armenia (thus allowing his grandson Armenian citizenship by descent, if he wishes). |
Branch of service, rank, and years served in the military for any family members:
Additional Notes: | My fiancé has lost a whole branch of his family because his grandfather was raised by Iranians after his parents died, one to martyrdom and the other to illness. The records should be in Armenia and Iran. I may be able to find more specific dates and locations for some events. Researchers may need to know Armenian and/or Farsi and/or Russian (as Armenia was part of the Russian Empire). Possible additional projects in the same region and time frame, if this one goes well |
